Speaking from a play-value point of view:

My DD got this for Christmas and she loves it. It is one of the most played-with AG items we've ever had (DD has always loved horses and has had many horse-related toys over the years, so I knew she would love it).

The background is very heavy and sturdy. You can't really tell it is cardboard, because it is pretty thick. It would be better if it were a few inches taller (it is shorter than the dolls and the horses), but it is still a very nice piece. It comes with quite a bit of fencing. Right now my daughter has used it to make a corral between her bed and closet and it covers a lot of space.

As for the price... yeah, it's pretty high. But then, I feel that way about most AG stuff. I buy it because it is a better alternative to most "toys", and the prices don't bug me too much, since it is all my DD asks for. But like anything, it would always be better if it were cheaper. If I had to name a price that I think is "fair" for the stable, as compared to most toys on the market, I would say $50.
